Watering The Trees
The best laid plans... On April 22nd, Earth Day Keep Seminole Beautiful planted 25 trees as part of Fairwinds Credit Union's Green Debit Card Tree planting program in the 18th Street Park.
When it came time to water in the trees the water spigot we had arranged to use didn't work. We needed an alternative water supply. On the 23rd the City of Sanford came to our rescue, on the 25th at the Earth Day Everyday event we stretched a hose more the 600 feet to water them. With the spigot still not repaired a Keep Seminole Beautiful Team filled plastic two-liter bottles, water jugs, buckets, ice chests and more and brought them to the park and started hand watering the trees. Thanks to the noted environmental author, Bill Belleville for providing additional water they could refill their containers twice to give the trees a good watering. Stay tuned to this continuing drama as we wait for the rainy season to begin!

Mike, a Winter Springs High School Senior who responded to a text message for help, waters one of the trees. This was after volunteering at the Environmental Studies Center Saturday morning - helping out at the Central Florida Earth Day event Saturday afternoon - then Sunday morning he picked up trash along the Cross Seminole Trail and fought non-native invasive plants at the Environmental Studies Center in the afternoon. Not enough - on Wednesday afternoon Mike's joining in on a major office clean-up in our Sanford location.
It is an honor to work as a part of the Keep Seminole Beautiful team of caring people like Kristie and Mike. At the Earth Day Everyday event we had more than 40 volunteers, three days earlier at the tree planting we had more than 30, at the Central Florida Earth Day event 20 more volunteers cleaned the lake and provided input to a panel on water conservation. We also helped at the Seminole County Environmental Studies Center during their Open House and the next day fighting non-native invasive plants and picket up litter along the Cross Seminole Trail. We truly celebrated Earth Day! :)
