Volunteer UCF River Clean-up

from Wekiva Island

1014 Miami Springs Road
Longwood, 32779

Every year Volunteer UCF sends scores of volunteers to work on environmental projects in Seminole County. This time they are focusing on the Wekiva. Volunteer UCF encourages others to join in the effort.

This is a fun family activity. We take 2 or 3 person canoes (with kids 4 person) and go out on the magnificent Wekiva River and use small nets to pick up any trash we see. A very easy canoe trip that offers great camera moments.

This year's Earth Day celebration will be on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Lake Concord in Casselberry.

The City of Casselberry, the Casselberry Friends of the Park and Keep Seminole Beautiful have joined forces to bring you Earth Day 2011! This is a FREE event and open to the public.

The Cassselberry Friends of the Park plans are to raise enough money to help clean up our lakes of non-native invasive plants and replace them with local native plants in hopes that they be an inviting environment for local wildlife. By ridding the lakes of non-native invasive plants we would be creating a welcoming environment for otters and other wildlife. Our lakes are currently home to otters, but sadly, only one or two of them exist. We would like to see our efforts bring more otters, fish and other wildlife.

Keep Seminole Beautiful runs 70+ events a year, every month we do 2 river clean-ups, pick up litter under the County's Adopt-A-Road program and have a Non-native Invasive plant removal at Big Tree Park. Additionally we have many other projects, some large like this Earth Day Project or smaller like planting a Native Plant Butterfly Garden.

One hundered percent of our funding comes from private sources, corporate doners, service contracts, grants and projects like "Earth Day 2011 It's In Your Hands."

The theme this year is "It's In Your Hands". We would like to raise awareness and show that the future of our community is in everyone's hands. The City of Casselberry is also including Arbor Day so be sure to come by and win a free tree giveaway!
This event will be split into 6 areas. The main vendor/sponsor area, Educational Fun Zone, Transportation Area, Art House, On-Stage Productions, and Food Court.

Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree)

is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. It originated in Nebraska City, Neb., in the United States in 1872. J. Sterling Morton is the founder of Arbor Day. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872, and an estimated 1 million trees were planted that day.

Many countries now observe a similar holiday. Though usually observed in Spring, the date varies, depending on  and suitable planting season.

Birdsey Northrop of  was responsible for globalizing it when he visited Japan in 1883 and delivered his Arbor Day and Village Improvement message. In that same year, the American Forestry Association made Northrup the Chairman of the committee to campaign for Arbor Day nationwide. He also brought his enthusiasm for Arbor Day to Australia, Canada and Europe.

Arbor Day reached its height of popularity on its 125th anniversary in 1997, when David J. Wright, noticed that a Nebraska non profit called the National Arbor Day Foundation had taken the name of the holiday and commercialized it for their own use as a  for their publication "Arbor Day," so he countered their efforts, launched a website, and trademarked it for "public use celebrations" and defended the matter in a federal district court in the United States to insure it was judged as property of the , the case was settled in October 1999. Today as a result of Wright's efforts anyone can use the term Arbor Day and anyone can hold their own Arbor Day celebration.

National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April
