 Global Warming

by Mary Panks-Holmes

Save The Date!!!  April 22nd 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the Wayne Densch Safari Rooms at the Central Florida Zoo.

We are happy to announce the Zoo will be hosting a presentation on Global Warming by Mary Panks-Holmes, a representative from The Climate Project.  She will discuss the scientific strategies behind climate change, increase awareness and provide practical solutions we can all practice to do our part to fight global warming.

From the website, The Climate Project- www.theclimateproject.com

---The Climate Project, a nonprofit organization based in Nashville, TN, began operations in June 2006 with the mission of increasing public awareness of the climate crisis at a grassroots level in the United States and abroad. By April 2007, a diverse group of 1,000 volunteers from throughout the U.S. had been trained by Al Gore himself to present a version of the slide show featured in the Academy Award-winning film An Inconvenient Truth. As of October 2008, they had delivered nearly 20,000 presentations and reached a combined audience of 2 million people.—

The presentation is free and open to the public so please spread the word!!!!

Keep Seminole Beautiful (KSB) announces Fairwinds Credit Union’s (FCU) launch of their 2009 tree planting project with an Earth Day, April 22nd tree planting in Sanford’s 18th Street Park at 5:30 PM.  Volunteers from FCU and KSB will be planting the trees.

Fairwinds Credit Union: When members open a checking account with e-Statements and direct deposit they can receive the new Go Green debit card.  As members use the card, a contribution will be made to the FAIRWINDS “Central Florida Tree Fund” for every signed transaction.  This special fund will be used to plant trees throughout Central Florida in the upcoming months. For more information contact: Raquel Chapon, Community Relations Director, FAIRWINDS Credit Union, rchapon@fairwinds.org, 407-277-6030 ext. 51223

The City of Sanford’s Urban Forester has chosen the trees and planting locations that “will fit in with the long range tree planting plan.” Elizabeth Harkey, vanlande@sanfordfl.gov, 407-688-5000.

Mike Barr, Executive Director said “this is a great way to help celebrate Earth Day - launching the Fairwinds tree plant effort.” “This event is a great precursor of the Earth Day Everyday Festival that will be held at this park on Saturday. That event is an interesting partnership with Seminole County’s 17 & 92 CRA, the City of Sanford, the Home Builders Association, the Central Florida Zoo, the Friends’ of the 18th Street Park and Keep Seminole Beautiful.”
