International support for the
Wekiva River

The team of Volunteers
The Wekiva Falls Resort sponsored an International Wekiva River Clean-up. International students from South Korea, Taiwan, France, Germany, Brazil and Russia were on hand as a part of the AYUSA program. These students are attending local high schools in central Florida (Lyman, Lake Howell, East Ridge, South Lake, Titusville and Astronaut) and living with American families. One of the goals of the program is to involve the students in volunteer work. Ellen Barr of course, likes to make sure that includes the natural environment and the Wekiva. Starting December 4th Wekiva Falls will host a clean-up, on the 1st Saturday.

Many other volunteers helped out including the renowned team from Wekiva Island led by the “Lady of the Wekiva” Mary Sue Weinaug. They recovered 234 pounds of scrap steel they took back to Wekiva Island with them. While they were weighing it another group of volunteers who went out from Wekiva Island added an additional 13 pounds. We are estimating 300 + pounds of trash of which 75% will be recycled. Wekiva Island hosts river clean-ups on the 4th Saturday of each month (not Christmas Day in December).

The river cleanup is a part of Keep Seminole Beautiful’s events program to create a greater sense of community in Seminole County. Helping maintain our natural places gives the participants some sweat equity and an ownership interest in them. By each of us taking personal responsibility we will all help Keep Seminole Beautiful.
Thank you Wekiva Falls for helping Keep Seminole Beautiful!
